Chabi and Ghosuda
Subir Ghosh, nicknamed "Ghosuda" by my friends.
Apartment 19A John Vincent's 15 Oct., 2005, 7pm
The buzzer rings from
building Entrance, "Its Subir".
"Come on up", says a voice, amongst sounds of hilarity and laughter
of the friends in the Apartment.
The door bell rings, "Yes" says a white female as she opens the
door.
"Is John Vincent in?"
"John, who?"
Four bewildered faces, Subir, Chabi, daughter and son-in-law. Chabi
is puzzled, points to the name on the door, "John and Christine
Vincent".
Subir looks into the apartment, then spots a face "Chandi, what a
surprise, when did you get here?" sheer delight and amazement on his
face. "Let me introduce to Susan, my wife". John, Christine, and all
gathered join in greetings and welcome. Subir closes the door, when
the bell rings again.
"Flowers for a Mr Subea
Gosh", poker face, cap wrong way round, as Subir opens the door. "Are
you Mr Gosh, sign here, please. What about my tip?"
Subir fumbles in his wallet, takes out a $2 dollar note. John pipes
in "He deserves at least $5 for coming all the way up here to the
19th Floor".
Subir relents, takes out a $5 dollar note and hands itover. "Thank
you Ghosuda", as he doffs his cap.
Subir peers into his face, puzzled, as if to say "Do I know you?"
"Ghosuda, I am Partha" to the sounds of merry laughter from all
gathered, a big hug as Subir and Partha embrace each other.
The party is now in full
swing, memories exchanged, missing years, goodwill messages from the
website and cards.
Phone rings, its Ashis from Canada; yet another ring, its Kiran from
Mumbai for a double whammy, Subir and Partha; too overcome, Kiran
hands the phone to Juhi while he recovers, then, in his own
inimitable Kiran Sinha style he speaks to all in the room saying
hello to one and all
The party is now in full swing, with Glenlivet Malt Whisky, wine, ghoogny and fish cakes, Patna style (Christie), Jhaal-muree Kolkata brand (Judy Vincent), Spare ribs and Rosogollas (New York vintage (Brother John), Gajar Halwa (Ghosuda Special by Christie) - Farewell USA, here I come Kolkata.
"This is the best party we have had in this apartment". - John
Reporters: Partha and Chandi
I want to share a very special treat I received at John Vincent's yesterday. John and Christie had invited us to a farewell dinner at their place on the 15th. On reaching his place a lady answered the doorbell and asked who we were looking for. When I said John and Christie Vincent, she said no one by that name lives there. Imagine my astonishment! For the last 23 years I have been calling at this address and I am being told that the Vincents do not live there. However, just then I saw Chandi and John standing behind the lady. Just imagine my relief, but who was this lady? She was Susan, Chanda's better half whom I did not have the privilege of meeting before.
But the evening had just started!
After we had sat down, the door bell rang and John said there was someone at the door asking for me. At the door there was a man wearing a baseball cap back words. He handed me a bouquet of flowers and a card and asked for a tip. I took out my wallet and was about to hand him $2 when John said I should give him $5, which I did. The man said "Thank you Ghosuda". Do you know who this was? None other than Partha Ganguly whom I had failed to recognize. I was amazed that Chandi with Susan had flown over from London and Partha from Houston for this occasion. It brought tears to my eyes which I controlled with difficulty.
Then Kiron from Bombay and Ashis from Calgary called to wish me well. To top this Nirmala, Partha's wife, also called.
It was such a lovely evening that it will remain with me for ever. Ghosuda.
"We have sold our house in New Jersey and will be relocating to a flat in Jodhpur Park in Kolkata, which we had bought last year." - Subir
Dear Subir: Wish we had connected earlier and not at the tail end of your stay in the US! Thanks for scanning and sending our senior year class photos; this website would not be the same without those old photos. Hope your journey back is safe and your relocation free of hassles. Gwen and I are looking forward to joining Chabi and you and many others at our 50th-year class reunion at Kolkata and Patna in November 2006. With best wishes, Paul
Dear Subir: I am Anwar your old classmate, I have recently been found by the great 56 Xavier group. It took me a while to catch up and recall my old classmates. Now everyones faces have returned in my memory. Its little too late for you Subir, as now you are leaving New York for Kolkata. I am wishing you all the best in your relocation. We all plan on retiring to our home, you are great to do this. My wife Rafat and I are wishing you a happy return to Kolkata. I am planning to see you and your Chabi at reunion-God willing. Goodbye...Love you all. Anwar
Ghosuda, it is indeed a pity that we both stayed for years in the same continent and never got the chance to meet. We will have to remedy that! We wish you the very best dear friend, and may all your future plans come to fruition, to enable you to settle down in your new home and then allow you and Chabi to bask in the sunshine of the love of your family and friends. With all our love and best wishes for a safe return to Kolkata, Nirmala & Partha
Dear Chabi and Ghosuda someone's loss is another's gain. Yes, our mates in US will loose you and we here would gain you. Wish you both a very warm welcome to Kolkata. It would give us a chance to bump into you now and then. In words of Dileep you would be in striking range. WELCOME HOME. Juhi Kiran
Dear Chabi & Ghosuda: It is only on 20th Sept, when we spent a memorable day in New York, reunited with Ghosuda after 49 years - wonderful memories revived. Now, both of you have willingly undertaken a major upheaval in your lives, relocating to Kolkata to settle down amongst your loved ones to enjoy your golden years. Our best wishes for the future, and good luck with your move from USA to India. All our mates accepts that we have to compensate for our last 49 years, so you can bet on all us: we will be now meeting more regularly in Kolkata, in USA and UK or whatever location our Class of 56 decides. Susan and Chandi
Dear Chabi and Subir: We wish both of you bon voyage and oodles of good luck on your decision to relocate to Kolkata. Both of you had a long and, we are sure, an exciting stay in the United States and must be looking forward to retirement to more familiar surroundings. We hope the readjustment will be smooth and that you will be happy with what you have decided to do. If there is any way in which we could help please feel free to call on us and we will do our best. With all good wishes. Terry and Vijaya Varma

Our dear Ghosuda and Chabi, We are all eagerly waiting to welcome you two at Kolkata. Our `56er Xavierian, Patna family here will immediately put you on job with a song only!! Subir Ghosh, a distinguished Xavierian, Patna, served at two countries: one his native, the other as a guest. He never told us but we gathered from elsewhere that he left a distinct mark as an Engineer at the companies he served in both the countries. We are proud of him. May Durga Ma bless Chabi, Ghosuda and their family all happiness on Bijaya Dashami. Be well my friend and keep smiling! Shantonu
